Start with the actual product
A provider may offer several medications and formulations under one weight-management program. Ask which exact product is being discussed, its route, intended use and whether it is an FDA-approved drug or a compounded preparation.
A reference to semaglutide or tirzepatide does not, by itself, establish the product’s approval status. Nor does it establish that every option is appropriate for a particular person.
Compounding is a different regulatory category
FDA says compounded drugs are not FDA-approved and are not reviewed before marketing for safety, effectiveness or quality. FDA advises that compounded drugs should only be used when an individual medical need cannot be met by an approved drug.
Discuss that distinction with the prescribing clinician. A compounded oral product should not be described as equivalent to an approved oral medication merely because the ingredient name sounds familiar.
Compare care and access separately
A manufacturer access channel, a pharmacy and a telehealth care program serve different roles. One may help fill a prescription while another provides the ongoing clinical care.
